FCA’s initiatives are focused in acute need areas in Qinghai, especially in Guinan County, Hainan Tibetan Prefecture.
Herding and farming are key economic activities in seventy-three administrative villages that fall within three herding and three farming townships and towns. Guinan is home to 65,474 people of which Tibetans comprise 72.3 percent. The average elevation is 3,100 meters above sea level. Most communities herd sheep, goats, yaksand cattle. Farmers cultivate barley, wheat, and potatoes. The county also has a large area of desert that is increasing in size. Many herding communities lack basic education, inadequate access to basic health, and convenient supplies of water.
